Floyd County Board of Education Decides to Delay Start of 2020-2021 School Year

July 9th, 2020 – 12:00 PM

Floyd County Schools –

During a called meeting on July 9, the Floyd County Board of Education agreed to delay the start of the 2020-2021 school year until August 13, 2020, in response to a recommendation by Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson. The recommendation is slated to be approved at the regular Board meeting on July 20, 2020.

Delaying the start of the school year will give Floyd County Schools (FCS) students, parents, teachers, and principals time to prepare for the 2020-2021 school year as District personnel reviews updated guidance from public health officials.

“We believe that this change in student start date will give us time to see the current cases of COVID-19 subside and hopefully allow us to start school in person. I am thankful to the Board for recognizing that a brief delay to the start of the school year will give our students and staff the best opportunity for success. We are ready to see learning taking place but the health and safety of our students and staff is always our first priority,” said FCS Superintendent Dr. Jeff Wilson.

Earlier this week, a survey was sent to all FCS families asking parents to choose between traditional in-school learning model and virtual at-home learning model for the first none weeks of the 2020-2021 school year. The survey closes on July 21 at 11:59 p.m.

District personnel remain in close conversation with public health officials and remain committed to decision-making which prioritizes student and staff safety while giving families the flexibility to make choices that are best for them. Details concerning the 2020-2021 school year will continue to be released as soon as it becomes available.

All teachers will report on their regularly scheduled date of Thursday, July 30, 2020 for the first day of pre-planning.
