Initial jobless claims decline in July

First-time claims for unemployment insurance were down slightly last month in Floyd County when compared to the month before.

According to the Georgia Department of Labor, there were 4,292 initial claims filed in July, down from 4,928 in June.

However, that is still much higher than the 658 initial claims filed in July of 2019.

In Bartow County, 5,253 claims were filed last month, down from 5,358 in July but more than the 266 filed in July of last year.

Chattooga County saw 285 claims, compared to 318 the month before and 43 this same time last year.

2,707 Gordon County residents filed for unemployment last month, down from 3,347 the month before but up from 428 in July of 2019.

Polk County reported 1,656 claims, down from 2,005 in June but up from 118 this time last year.

The Rome area lost another 100 jobs from June to July, bringing the total job losses to 400 for the year.
