The Georgia Department of Transportation has posted a proposed plan for public input about a new bypass for Summerville that will include 3 roundabouts. The bypass would run from Highway 48 near Hunt St. to Highway 27 just west of the Chattooga River Crossing, near Wildlife lake Rd, and would include a bridge over Town Branch.

The 3 proposed roundabouts would be located at US Highway 27, Highway 100 and Highway 114. Commissioner Winters and County Public Works Director Joe Reed have both expressed being in favor of the bypass and roundabouts. The proposed construction will help to ease congestion that typically happens between Edmondson Dr. and Highway 48. Anyone who travels this route frequently has likely encountered this traffic at one time or another.

The Georgia DOT, has also stated that the crash rates on Highway 27 in downtown Summerville are higher than average for this type of road. This project hopes to alleviate that as well. The public can give their input until January 4th, 2021. Please visit https://621082-gdot.hub.arcgis.com/ or visit www.dot.ga.gov/AboutGDOT/PublicOutreach and search for Project ID# 621082.
