STAFF REPORTS

Two children injured in a Friday morning fire in North Rome remain in critical but stable condition.

According to Rome Fire Marshal Mary Catherine Chewning, firefighters got a call regarding a structure fire at 52 Washington Street off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

There were two children, ages 5 and 10, trapped in the home.

Firefighters immediately made entry to the structure and rescued both children, who were transported to Floyd Medical Center and then airlifted to Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.

The children were staying with grandparents, who are understandably distraught but otherwise uninjured.

The origin of the fire was in a utility room on the main level of the home.

It appears to be electrical in nature and accidental.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the family with basic necessities.
