The investigation continues into the tragic shooting deaths of a Minnesota State Representative and her husband, as well as the wounding of a Minnesota State Senator and his wife by a man representing himself as a police officer.
The suspect, who is now in custody, was driving an SUV with police-style lights and was wearing a badge when he went to the front door of State Sen. John Hoffman early Saturday morning.
According to Captain Ron Hunton with the Floyd County Police Department, if someone shows up at your home saying they are a police officer, there are things you can do to check and see if they are legit.
“If something doesn’t seem right—like if you are not expecting the police at your home–call 911, and say there is an officer at your door and you don’t know why they are there, ” he said. “Ask if this is really an officer. You can ask for the officer’s name and tell dispatch to see if the officer is who he says he is. I’ve had people do that to me. I had a traffic stop once, and it was at night or the early morning hours, and when I walked up to the vehicle, the lady was on the phone to 911 to make sure I was actually a police officer.”
Hunton also stressed that you should not be afraid to ask questions.
“You can ask why we are there, or what is going on, and that kind of thing,” he said. “Sometimes, it’s unexpected to have the police at your door. There may be something happening in your neighborhood. It could be a burglary or some other violent crime that occurred nearby, and we may just be knocking on doors, looking for witnesses who may have heard something or seen something. Perhaps you have a camera at your home. So, just ask questions.”
Hunton was a guest on WRGA’s First News with Doug Walker on Monday.
