The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) –

The Georgia Department of Transportation is gathering feedback on a proposed bypass that would reroute traffic around downtown Summerville.
The estimated $45 million project would link Highways 27, 100, and 114 on the southwest side of town, creating an alternate route to ease congestion through the downtown area.
The plan includes roundabouts at major intersections and improvements for pedestrian safety. Traffic on Highway 48 would also be impacted.
GDOT says the bypass is aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing crashes, and better handling freight and commuter traffic through the area.
An open house will be held Monday, July 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Chattooga County Civic Center on Highway 48, across from Truist Bank. Residents can also submit feedback online through August 5.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
