Blood Assurance is facing an emergency need for donations after a sudden spike in trauma cases across the region. The increase in emergency situations has significantly strained the nonprofit’s already thin supply.
The holiday season is historically one of the most challenging times of the year for blood collection. Hospitals often experience higher demand for lifesaving products, while donation rates typically fall due to travel, seasonal illness, and schedule changes. Blood Assurance officials say this combination has pushed inventory levels to a critical point.
“We are asking our community members to donate as soon as they are able,” said Garry Allison, Senior Vice President of Operations at Blood Assurance. “Trauma cases and other emergencies can deplete the blood supply quickly. Every donation helps ensure hospitals have what they need to care for patients who are depending on us.”
To encourage donations during this difficult period, Blood Assurance is offering several seasonal incentives and ongoing donor rewards:
Holiday Incentives
• All donors will receive festive elf-themed holiday socks while supplies last.
• O-negative and AB-plasma donors will receive a $25 e-gift card as a thank you for their lifesaving impact.
Ongoing Donor Rewards Programs
• Regular O-type donors can participate in exclusive rewards opportunities designed to recognize frequent giving via our Hero Club.
• Platelet donors are eligible for the Heart of Gold program, offering special gifts and perks for consistent donations.
Blood Assurance is the primary supplier for Atrium Health Floyd and AdventHealth Redmond, so donations help local patients. One donation can help trauma victims, cancer patients, newborns, and others in critical need.
To be eligible to donate, individuals must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health. Donors are asked to eat a hearty meal and drink plenty of water before donating.
