It appears as though work on the Second Avenue widening project will last at least another two years.
According to the latest update from the Georgia Department of Transportation, shared during Wednesday’s Rome-Floyd Transportation Policy Committee meeting, the new completion date is March 2028.
The original completion date was October 2026, but there have been ongoing issues with drainage structures, storm lines, a fire line that has been encountered during construction, and a 16-inch force sewer main that had to be relocated.
The $26.2 million Second Avenue project, which is six-tenths of a mile, began in the summer of 2024.
Once finished, two lanes will run in each direction, separated by a median that allows for turn lanes into the Atrium Health Floyd campus and Heritage Park.
The Y-intersection has been removed, and all traffic will be routed to a four-leg intersection at Second Avenue and Turner McCall Boulevard.
