This week has been proclaimed Salvation Army Week by both the Rome City and Floyd County Commissions.
Since its founding in Great Britain in 1865, the Salvation Army has provided humanitarian relief and spiritual guidance throughout the world.
Major Hank Harwell with the Salvation Army of Rome and Floyd County spoke about the organization’s local efforts in the past year.
“We served over 15,000 meals (dinners) that we do every night, 365 days a year,” he said. “We don’t take a day off. If someone is hungry, they can come by our dining room and get something to eat every day. We were also able to provide over 3,000 nights of lodging for the homeless. Again, thank you for all of the support from the city as well as all of the residents, not just Rome, but Floyd County as well.”
On Tuesday, the local Salvation Army celebrated the work of all of its volunteers and supporters during an appreciation luncheon at the Rome Civic Center.
“Last year we had over 1,800 volunteers giving almost 9,000 volunteer hours,” Harwell said. “Much of that was at Christmas, but as I mentioned earlier today at our luncheon–just because we are more visible at Christmas doesn’t mean that we stop what we do. We do what we do every day throughout the entire year.”
