Floyd County Tax Commissioner Kevin Payne took time during Tuesday’s Floyd County Commission meeting to thank the commission and Floyd County employees who worked to move and reopen the Tax Commissioner’s Office and Tax Assessor’s Office following the Floyd County Historic Courthouse fire.
“Tuesday morning, the fire was still going,” Payne said. “Thursday morning, we had the property tax office open, and I don’t mean we had a card table, a laptop, and somebody to answer questions, I mean we had computers, printers, and phones to wait on the public. We opened the tag officer the next day, on Friday. The only reason it took that long is that we didn’t have any inventory. We had to get the inventory from the Georgia Department of Revenue. It took until Friday to get that inventory in here. I can’t tell you how amazing that is. That would not happen everywhere.”
Payne also recognized the employees in his office who quickly adapted and continued providing services to Floyd County residents.

Also on Tuesday, a proclamation for Animal Control Officers Week was presented to Public Animal Welfare Services Director Katy Walters.
“The gentleman and ladies that we have working at animal control, it is a very tiring job,” Walters told the commission. “It is day-in, day-out, and they are on-call every other week. They are answering phones, picking up animals, and helping with animals. Not just helping with the animals, but helping with the people. We operate a free food bank through the shelter, as well as a low-cost spay-neuter through the shelter. So, it really is a multi-faceted operation that we have going on.”
The commission also approved the appointments of Dr. Dan Hanks and David Newby to the Hospital Authority of Floyd County and approved the appointment of Devon Smyth to the Highland Rivers Board to fill an unexpired term.
