The State of Georgia has officially approved a new public charter school in Cave Spring, and on Saturday, everyone is invited to a celebration.

The effort to open a charter school began shortly after the closing of Cave Spring Elementary School, and four years later, all of the hard work has paid off.

Saturday’s celebration will be at 10 a.m. at the Cave Spring Historical Society’s new pavilion.

“We’re going to have maybe 30 minutes of remarks from folks from the city as well as from some of our board,” said Academy founder Judy Taylor. “We will introduce to everyone our superintendent-principal, that is the title, and that is Dr. Dawn Williams, who many people in this area know. In fact, Dr. Williams has taught or been an administrator in each of the three districts that we will serve.”

Attendees will be able to meet the board members and discuss whether the charter school is right for them.

“Cave Spring will host this school; it will be located there,” Taylor added. “Cave Spring has been a hub for public education since the early days, when the Cave Spring school was established as a K-12 back in 1922. We had 100 years of that school, until it was closed in May of 2022. Then, we also have the Georgia School for the Deaf. So, Cave Spring grew around public education, and we are bringing that back.”

The Northwest Georgia Charter Academy is set to open in August of 2026 with grades K-5.

Open enrollment is set to begin September 1 of this year.

The tuition-free, state-funded school will serve students in Rome, Floyd County, and Polk County.
