Election 2025: Understanding ballot choices

Wednesday, October 22, 2025–9:30 a.m.

-Floyd County Elections-

Early voting continues for the November 4 elections, and the Floyd County Board of Elections is reminding voters about how the ballot works.

You may vote for up to the maximum number of candidates allowed in each race.

For the Rome City Commission, it’s three candidates, and for the Rome City School Board, it is seven.

You can also choose fewer or leave any contest blank.

It’s completely up to you.

If you see a message that says “Your ballot is valid, but there are warnings,” don’t worry.

That simply means you left a race blank or made fewer selections than allowed.

Your ballot is still valid and will be counted once cast and scanned.

Early voting continues until October 31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Floyd County Elections Office on East 12th Street.

You can also vote this Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

In Cave Spring, early voting is taking place at city hall between the hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm each day.

Voters in Cave Spring can also cast their ballots this Saturday from 9 to 5.

Understanding Ballot Choices:

Voting is an individual right and personal decision. Each voter determines how to complete their ballot, including whether or not to make selections in every race or question.

Voters may select up to the maximum number of choices allowed in each contest, choose fewer selections, or leave any contest blank. This standard applies to all races, ballot questions, and referendums. Every voter has the right to make, or decline to make, any selection.

Ballot Warnings and Review

If a contest is left blank or fewer selections are made than allowed, the Ballot Marking Device (BMD) may display the following message:

“Your ballot is valid, but there are warnings.”

This message is informational only and does not indicate an error. The ballot remains valid and will be counted.

During the review screen, prior to printing:

• Blank contests will be indicated as “BLANK CONTEST.”

 • Undervoted contests will be indicated as “UNDER_VOTE_BY_”, followed by the number of unselected choices.

Voter Options

Voters are not required to make selections in every race or question. Voters may:

 • Leave any contest blank,

• Select up to the maximum number of candidates allowed,

• Select fewer candidates than the maximum allowed, or

• Write in a candidate, whether qualified or unqualified. Ballots will be counted as long as they are properly cast and scanned.
