We are less than a year from the opening of the Northwest Georgia Charter Academy in Cave Spring.
The Academy, which will serve students who live in Floyd and Polk counties, recently held its first public lottery.
“It’s much like the Pre-K lottery that a lot of people are familiar with, but we just have to look at every grade level,” said Superintendent and Principal Dawn Williams. “We reached our deadline for pre-enrollment, and our lottery was on Monday. We did have to do a lottery for kindergarten, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade. So, we have waiting lists for those grade levels because we had more applications than seats.”
Williams spoke a little bit about the curriculum.
“EL Education has a whole school model, which is what we are following,” she said. “It brings in the project-based learning. It brings in the character part, but it also has ELA [English Language Arts] curriculum, which will be aligned to the standards. It embeds social studies and science in it. So, a lot of what the students need to master in those two content areas is already connected into the standards for the ELA part. Then we will be using the state’s framework for math.”
The academy will open on August 3 with grades K-5, and the possibility of having a middle school as well.
“We need people who are interested to pre-enroll because that is how we are going to determine whether or now we have what we need,” Williams said. “The interest is growing weekly. In particular, interest in 6th grade has grown a whole lot here in the last few days. If we have enough that we can financially be able to do it, we’re going to go ahead and open. Instead of just K-5, it’s going to be K-8. So, it’s really exciting.”
